Seramas are a bantam breed of chicken, otherwise known as a mini chicken. These chickens are considered an ornamental bird meaning they are great pets or show birds. Because Seramas are a mini chicken they are not as tolerant to heat and cold so making sure they have appropriate accommations for extreme weather and temperatures is a must when owning this breed. Also making sure that nesting boxes and roosts are appropriate for their tiny size is a must, though it is not uncommon for a Serama to chose to nest in bedding on the floor at times. There are different levels of extreme or non-extreme body profiles to consider when chosing your Serama, however, the more extreme body types are not offered here at Hexagon H Ranch. Serama also come in smooth, frizzled (regular and satin), and silkied feather types. We offer silkied and frizzled types here at Hexagon H Ranch. Occasionally Serama hens/pullets will have combs and/or waddles. Because I breed intentionally to produce more of those, I usually have an abundance of girls with combs and waddles. Yes, breeding age boys ave very bright red combs and waddles- so do laing age hens. Serama are very friendly chickens and it is not uncommon for Serama breeders and owners to keep multiple roosters housed together. Here at Hexagon H Ranch we introduce our birds to being handled by adults and kids alike from an early age so that they are more socialized and it is not uncommon for them to respond to their name, beg for treats and pets, and to consider you one of the flock! You can also rest assured that they are exposed to bunnies and our dogs (who work them) so they do not have a fear of dogs. (Please keep this in mind if your dog is not friendly to chickens or has not been exposed to them as our mini chickens do not posses the natural fear of dogs and will not recognize them as not safe.) Seramas love a good dirt/ dust bath and make the happiest chittering sounds. They are hilarious to watch as they are jam packed with personality in their tiny bodies. Though Serama are a very tiny breed of chicken, please note they are typically larger than Kikiriki. They will commonly range in height from as small as six inches to as tall as slightly under ten inches. I intentionally breed down on size so my birds have often been referred to as micro and teacup.*They carry themselves in a “V” shaped upright posture, and they even carry their tail feathers upright as well. The Serama has a muscular body and carries a full breast. Characteristically, Seramas have large wings when considered in proportion to their bodies, and they hold their wings downward, nearly touching the ground. The legs of the Serama can be either medium or long and are straight and set wide apart to accommodate their full and muscular body frame. Seramas are not known for being prolific layers, but they lay regularly- and eggs are small and it can take 2-4 Serama eggs to equal a store bought egg but though small, they are still perfectly edible and hatchable. Though there are no guarantees with poultry, with proper care if you are lucky enough, they are expected to live 7-10 years so plan accordingly when planning to bring home your mini chicken.
